More about this artwork

The painting portrays a gentle and minimalistic depiction of the upper portion of a human body. The palette is soft, primarily using shades of blush pink against a stark, flat black background. Sharp, simple lines contour the shapes subtly, sketching the outline of a shoulder, clavicle, and a hint of the upper arm. The artwork feels intimate and tender, focusing attention on the anatomy's fragile, almost ethereal curvature. This simplicity in form and restriction in color enhances the subject's delicate nature, suggesting both vulnerability and elegance.

Sviatlana Petushkova is a Belarusian artist whose vivid and distinctive creations immediately draw the viewer’s eye. Her artworks are characterized by expansive, luminous color fields and bold compositions that distinguish her in the contemporary art scene. Drawing inspiration from the visual language of comics and manga, Petushkova's technique eliminates shadows, creating a flattened space that emphasizes pure lines and colors. This method imbues her figures with an air of transparency and sincerity; nothing is concealed or equivocal, as she aims to represent the nude human form truthfully, stripped of any artificial mystique.

At the heart of Petushkova's work is a desire to confront and overturn traditional concepts of “ugliness” associated with the human body. She frequently employs daring perspectives and energetic poses, openly celebrating a multitude of female forms without restraint or censorship. Her depictions of women epitomize self-assurance and delight, liberated from conventional ideals of beauty. Through her paintings, she seeks to inspire viewers to see and embrace the beauty present in every body, irrespective of age, size, or outward appearance.

Sviatlana Petushkova’s dedication to her art is firmly grounded in her academic preparation. She completed her studies at the Gymnasium-College of Arts and at the Belarusian State Academy of Fine Arts in Minsk, where she specialized in easel graphics. After graduating, she joined the "Neon Head" artistic community in 2008, becoming an active participant in both solo and group exhibitions. Her achievements continued as she became a member of the Belarusian Artists' Union in 2019 and founded the Belarusian House of Graphic Arts, the nation’s only printmaking studio.

In addition to her creative practice, Petushkova has significantly contributed to the cultural life of her country by curating exhibitions, organizing art festivals, and conducting masterclasses. However, following the Belarusian elections of 2020 and the subsequent wave of political repression, she was compelled to relocate to Vilnius, Lithuania, where she perseveres with both her artistic and teaching endeavors. Through her personal story and her ongoing creative pursuits, Sviatlana Petushkova continues to reshape ideas about beauty and promote body positivity worldwide.
