More about this artwork

The painting depicts a softly crumpled piece of fabric, rendered in a monochromatic scale, suggesting a gentle and intricate play of light and shadow. The detailed folds and crevices of the fabric are captured with precise shading, giving it a tactile, almost ethereal quality. The texture is so vivid that it almost invites the viewer to reach out and touch the cool, smooth surface of the draped material. The background is minimal, focusing the viewer's attention solely on the fabric's elegant forms and the subtly graded tones of gray that suggest both depth and softness.

Arūnas Vilkevičius is a contemporary artist recognized for a level of realism in his work that can often appear to surpass reality itself. Though his enthusiasm for drawing and painting was evident from an early age, he embarked on his professional painting career only a few years ago. This rather recent shift into the world of professional art underscores the remarkable speed of his development and his dedication, illustrating how much can be achieved in a brief period through perseverance and talent.

Watercolour is the medium Vilkevičius has selected as his main form of expression, attracted by its subtle qualities as well as its unpredictable and demanding character. Renowned for its difficulty, watercolour allows scant opportunity for revision, requiring each brushstroke to be intentional. Vilkevičius welcomes these demands, using them to deepen his involvement in the creative process and to challenge the limits of his own artistry.

At the heart of Vilkevičius's creations are recurring themes of the female form and flowers—motifs that reflect the delicate and refined nature of watercolour itself. He frequently photographs his models and later works from these images in his studio, employing this technique to meticulously portray the beauty and ideal found in the natural world. Many of his renderings of women are positioned against backgrounds suffused with diffuse, pale light, lending an otherworldly atmosphere, while pieces such as "In the Flow of Life" delve into the harmonious relationship between people and the world of nature. When painting flowers, he treats them much like portraits, isolating single blossoms or small groups to evoke their distinct character and mood.

Vilkevičius speaks candidly about the emotional dimensions of his artistic life—a path marked by anxieties, challenges, and constant introspection. In spite of episodes of uncertainty and an often elusive pursuit of perfection, it is the act of painting with watercolour that provides him with a sense of fulfillment and self-discovery. Through this creative passage, he has learned to accept the impossibility of achieving perfection, understanding that it is the striving for it that enriches both his art and his life as a whole.
