Odeta Putkytė (b. 1993, Lithuania) is both an artist and art theorist, whose academic background and creative pursuits are deeply rooted in contemporary art discourse. She earned her bachelor's degree at the Minerva Art Academy, later completing her master’s at Utrecht University. She is currently advancing her expertise through doctoral research in Arts at the University of Edinburgh, refining both her theoretical insights and her artistic practice.
Putkytė’s paintings are distinguished by their spontaneous, unseen qualities, arising from sudden surges of creative energy that manifest in her distinctive brushstrokes. Instead of adhering to conventional narrative structures, she intentionally welcomes absurdity within her artwork, employing it as a means to challenge perceptions of truth—especially as they appear within a vividly lit, almost playful visual environment.
At the core of Putkytė’s practice is an emphasis on capturing moments or occurrences rather than recounting stories; her focus rests on lived experience and the subjectivity involved in perceiving reality. Through this approach, her paintings encourage viewers to reflect on the delicate boundary between meaning and nonsense, providing a space where ambiguity and truth coexist openly and radiantly.
Putkytė herself characterizes her creative work as striving to maintain “a policy of not to lie—it saves time.” This ethos of honesty informs both her artwork and her theoretical explorations, as she delves into the intricacies of identity and authenticity. Her work invites genuine introspection about the nature of the self, highlighting the difficulties of understanding who we are amid life’s many uncertainties.
