More about this artwork

The painting presents a lush and vibrant landscape that captures the essence of a summer morning. The top portion of the canvas is dominated by a radiant, golden sky that gradates subtly into soft purples and warm oranges, suggesting the early morning light of sunrise. Below the sky, a distant, dreamlike vista of pale structures and hints of greenery are visible, rising above a hazy horizon. The lower half of the painting is filled with an exuberant, colorful array of flowers. The flowers are depicted in an impressionistic style, with thick applications of paint creating a tactile, almost three-dimensional effect. The floral field is a riot of colors—pinks, reds, yellows, whites, and greens all jumble together, conveying the wild, overflowing abundance of nature in full bloom. The overall impact of the painting is one of vivid, almost palpable warmth and light, capturing the lush vibrancy and serene beauty of a summer morning. The technique used adds texture and a sense of movement, as if a gentle morning breeze were sweeping across the canvas, rustling through the flowers and stirring the warm air.

Artist

Simonas Gutauskas, a Lithuanian artist, is recognized for his profound exploration of meaning, spirituality, and light in his work. Rather than seeking to astonish viewers, Gutauskas pursues depth and a sense of divinity within his art. As he describes it, his paintings represent spaces and visions that are distant from ordinary, realistic landscapes. He draws inspiration from fragments of childhood dreams and ageless experiences, conveying a sense that time itself dissolves in his creations. The golden and purple undulations, luminous suns, and clouds dissolving like wax all attest to the Great Power which, according to the artist, has created everything that surrounds us.

One of the most distinctive elements in Simonas Gutauskas’s landscapes is his rendering of light. Light takes center stage, permeating his canvases with either brilliance or quiet subtlety, and carries profound emotional weight. This attention to illumination shapes the atmosphere of his work, making any discussion of his art incomplete without consideration of how he manipulates both light and darkness. Water frequently appears as a motif as well, offering reflective surfaces that amplify the effects of radiance and deepen the painterly ambiance. Much like Monet, Gutauskas’s passion for portraying light situates him among those artists for whom illumination outweighs the tangible forms it touches.

Gutauskas’s deep engagement with light is not only fueled by his admiration for the Impressionists but also by his early training in stained glass. Although he began his artistic career specializing in this medium, its legacy can still be seen in his present landscapes. His paintings display strong colors, defined shapes, and broad, textured brushstrokes that evoke the feel of sculpted relief. This results in an organic blend that merges the glowing effects of stained glass with the nuances of painting, perfectly serving his artistic intent.

Nature, in Gutauskas’s art, is treated with affection, reverence, and deep sensitivity—each stroke on the canvas marked by commitment and care. His landscapes move beyond simple representation, portraying nature as an enigmatic force that encompasses both the fleeting and the everlasting. Born in Vilnius on February 2, 1965, Simonas Gutauskas completed his studies at the M.K. Čiurlionis Art School in 1982 and graduated from the State Art Institute (now Vilnius Academy of Arts) in 1990, with a specialization in monumental art. Since 1999, he has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union, working in both stained glass and painting, and has presented over forty solo exhibitions throughout Lithuania. His pieces have found their place in private collections across Lithuania, the USA, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and Poland.
