More about this artwork

The painting portrays a woman submerged in water, captured in a dynamic, almost ethereal state as she floats upside down. Her long, flowing brown hair, unfurling in the water, creates a sense of weightlessness and movement. She is clad in a flowing teal garment, embellished with subtle floral details, which swirls around her body, following the curves and contours with a gentle grace. Her closed eyes and serene facial expression evoke a dream-like tranquility, suggesting she is deeply immersed in a peaceful, introspective world. The background is a softly blurred mix of blues and greens, with hints of light that suggest either the surface of the water above or a reflection of some unseen light source, adding a luminous quality to the scene. The overall atmosphere is one of calm and surreal beauty, as if capturing a moment of pure, unbridled freedom and escape into a subconscious realm.

Vaidas Bakutis, born in 1962 in Lithuania, is a self-taught artist with around two decades of painting experience. His exploration of art unfolded naturally, as painting became an instinctive activity rather than a conscious decision. It grew into a vital aspect of his existence, offering him a rewarding avenue for personal expression.

Bakutis predominantly uses oil paints, utilizing both alla prima and layering techniques throughout his artistic practice. These approaches enable him to create works with rich depth and vividness, skillfully depicting subtle interactions of light and color. His commitment to these classic methods demonstrates a careful attention to detail and a genuine enthusiasm for his art.

The range of subjects in Bakutis’ paintings is wide, including still life, figurative pieces, and portraits.
