More about this artwork

The painting depicts a vibrant street scene in Vilnius' Old Town, capturing its architectural charm and lively atmosphere. The perspective is down a cobblestone street lined with historic buildings, painted in warm tones of yellow, orange, and coral. On the left, a baroque-style church tower with arched windows and a series of small decorative balustrades at each level dominates the skyline, stretching toward a sky brushed with soft blue and white hues, suggesting a clear, serene day. The building in the foreground on the right features a dark, steeply pitched roof and façade detailed with lighter shades, highlighting its aged texture and the play of light. Smaller architectural elements, like doors and windows, are suggested with brisk strokes of darker colors, providing depth and contrast. Figures of people, rendered in loose, swift brushstrokes, populate the street, adding a sense of scale and everyday life. These figures are abstract, their movements and forms captured with an impressionistic style that echoes the dynamic and transient nature of a cityscape. The overall impression is one of historical richness and cultural vibrancy, encapsulated within the serene and timeless beauty of Vilnius.

Help

Born in 1961, Vidmantas Jažauskas is a graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. In his paintings, viewers will find the fundamental values of painting. The artist, who has been systematically painting in seclusion for many years, avoids the hustle and bustle of exhibitions and does not seek to highlight his personality. Inner warmth, a wide range of emotions, and the uniqueness of each work are important qualities for an artist who seeks to show that the classical traditional manner of painting is not exhausted, and that he has infinite reserves. However, although Vidmantas Jažauskas follows the classical tradition of painting, his paintings are distinguished by their colours, their contrasting combinations and the colour patches used to construct forms. The artist is not so much interested in small, individual details, but in the whole, as if looking at everything from afar and squinting a little. The artist's inspiration usually comes from Lithuanian nature and cities. In the summer, the artist participates in plein-air workshops, works a lot outdoors, and spends his winters in the city, and then we can see the streets of Kaunas or Vilnius on his canvases, but the author prefers the romantic Užupis to everything.
