More about this artwork

In this serene winter landscape, the historical architecture of Kaunas Castle stands prominently against a chilly sky that hints at an approaching snowstorm. The foreground features snow-blanketed ground interspersed with bare, slender trees, contrasting sharply with the vibrant red hue of a traditional wooden structure, possibly a barn or storage shed. The background is dominated by the elegant, whitewashed stone facades and twin spires of the castle's towers, which pierce the skyline. The atmosphere is a mixture of tranquil snowy silence and the brooding menace of a dark, cloud-gathered sky looming above, suggesting the fleeting calm before a storm. Rays of sunlight break through the cloud cover, illuminating patches of the sky in a soft, golden glow that adds a hint of warmth to the cold landscape.

Artist

Petras Kardokas enjoys travelling and observing nature in various parts of Lithuania. This is where the author's inspiration for his paintings comes from. The artist captures our landscapes as if in a visual diary, at different times of the day and year, but his paintings always retain an impression of calm, warmth and cosiness. The artist's gaze is gentle, respectful and slightly romantic.

He was born in Lazdijai district. I graduated from school in the town of Mosėdis.

In 1968-1973 studied at the Faculty of Construction-Architecture of KPJ.

After graduation he worked as a foreman in various Lithuanian construction sites.

In the evenings, fulfilling a childhood dream, he began to study painting at A. Martinaicis Art School, under painter Alfonsas Vilpišauskas.

Finally, since 1990, he has devoted all his time to painting.
