Domas Mykolas Malinauskas (b. 1995), a sculptor from Lithuania, was born and raised in Kaunas. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2016, studying under the guidance of Henry B. Anderson. Over the course of his academic and artistic development, Mykolas has cultivated a unique style that connects current social concerns with the traditions of classical sculpture.
Mykolas’s artistic practice centers on the examination of stereotypes found throughout contemporary society. Utilizing sculptural forms, he contemplates existential questions and addresses the obstacles these stereotypes can pose, using his work as an invitation for reflection and discourse. His focus on these issues is intended to stir thought and foster a deeper appreciation of the assumptions that underpin society.
Frequently, Mykolas’s sculptures merge themes from nature with references to urban existence. This combination establishes compelling relationships between the technological cityscape and the mythologized “natural” world. Through this dynamic interaction, his works not only investigate the contrast between technology and nature but also offer new perspectives on how these spheres overlap in daily experience.
Lately, Mykolas has begun exploring the motifs of pop culture—a subject he believes is seldom addressed by contemporary Lithuanian sculptors. By bringing symbols of popular culture into the sphere of fine art, he elevates commonplace icons into thought-provoking artifacts. Removed from their familiar context, these elements encourage viewers to rethink their meanings and discover commonality within the collective rhythms of everyday life.
