More about this artwork

The painting captures an imposing, beautifully architected gateway, likely the entrance to a church complex. The gate is topped with three ornate crosses and enclosed by a tall white wall, detailed with subtle textures and slight discolorations that suggest age or exposure to elements. In the forefront, a robust, black metal gate bars entry, its design simple yet elegant, contrasting with the white of the walls. The ground in front of the gate is covered in snow, bearing a single set of tracks leading up to and away from the gate, imprinted deeply into the surface.Behind the gate, glimpses of a small community can be seen, with structures rendered in softer, muted tones, suggesting a humble, rustic village setting. The sky above is heavy and grey, indicating a cold, possibly wintry day. The horizon is blotted with darker shades, possibly trees or distant buildings, adding a sense of depth and isolation to the scene. Overall, the composition evokes feelings of quiet solitude and reverence, typical of a sacred site nestled in a rural landscape.

Artist

Marius Morkūnas is a contemporary artist who stands among the younger generation of Lithuanian creatives. Residing in Kaunas, Morkūnas has accumulated over two decades of experience in design, painting, and photography—disciplines he has actively pursued for more than 23 years. From a young age, his enthusiasm for art was unmistakable, prompting him to give precedence to art lessons and extracurricular artistic activities early in life. His formal artistic education commenced at the BRAKO art school in 1985 and continued at the Klaipėda Eduardas Balsis Gymnasium of Art, where he studied from 1986 until 1995.

Painting constitutes the heart of Morkūnas’s creative process, as he endeavors to instill a peaceful and spiritually restful quality in his work. He attains this through a minimalist approach—utilizing a restricted color scheme and stylized, expressive brushwork. His compositions are intentionally spare, leading the viewer’s focus toward an expansive, calm horizon that invites contemplation and encourages a feeling of tranquility.

The sea and seashore serve as Morkūnas’s primary sources of inspiration, rooted in his upbringing near the coast. Within many of his paintings, the delicate interaction between water and sky is a prominent theme, with the horizon subtly implied rather than explicitly marked, thus conjuring a sense of boundlessness. Common motifs throughout his art include hardy pine trees weathering the coastal winds, windswept firs, and boats—elements that encapsulate the essence of the shore.

Japanese artistic influences are readily apparent in his work, demonstrating his deep appreciation for its aesthetic values. As a trained photographer, Morkūnas frequently draws upon his own photographs to enhance the structure and chromatic balance within his paintings. With a careful consideration of composition and color, his artworks are ideally suited for those seeking a harmonious and soothing environment, making them particularly well-suited for bedrooms or other spaces where calm is desired.
