More about this artwork

The painting portrays two figures set against a backdrop that melds soft hues of yellow, green, and pink. To the left, there is a shadowy, spectral figure that appears eroded or fragmented, giving an impression of dissolution or fading. This figure is characterized by darker smudges and drips that create a sense of being engulfed or obscured, possibly suggesting torment or decay. To the right stands a second figure, rendered with more defining and vibrant colors, predominantly shades of blue and flesh tones that suggest vitality. The face of this figure is more distinctly articulated, with red lips and discernible eyes that stare outwards, as if decisive and confronting an unseen adversary. The stark contrast between the two figures might symbolize a narrative of struggle or resistance, underscored by the painting's title, "Fight For Freedom I."Overhead, crossing between these two figures are strokes that resemble barbed wire or fencing, adding a tactile sense of confinement or division. The drips and dynamic brushstrokes throughout invoke a feeling of movement and turbulence, as though reflecting the chaos of conflict. The painting intermingles elements of fragility and strength, conveying a poignant moment in an ongoing battle.

Jonė Šlepetytė Aidukė (born 1986) is a contemporary Lithuanian painter associated with the younger generation of artists in the abstraction movement. Her work centers on channeling the energy and emotions of nature, as well as resonances of historical events, through abstract visual language. Each piece draws viewers into an atmospheric realm shaped by delicate, rhythmic brushwork and subtle gradations of tone.

In her painting, Šlepetytė Aidukė investigates the relationship between textures and silhouettes, allowing them to merge with shadows that traverse the canvas. These elements not only engage the viewer’s attention but also dissolve boundaries between reality and abstraction, resulting in an experience that is dynamic, immersive, and contemplative.

Her development as an artist began with foundational training in painting conservation and restoration, where she acquired knowledge of classical Old Masters’ techniques. The expertise she gained in these studios inspired her to specialize further in painting. Her education was deepened through mentorship with prominent Lithuanian artists and professors Arvydas Martinaitis, Romanas Vilkauskas, and Ričards Garbačiauskas, whose impact is reflected in her technical skill and conceptual maturity.

Jonė Šlepetytė Aidukė continues to cultivate her artistry through active participation in numerous exhibitions and themed projects. Her body of work reveals a profound respect for traditional painting techniques as well as a dedication to expanding the continually changing language of contemporary abstraction.
