Eva Lauma, a Lithuanian artist, completed her painting studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1999. While her academic background is rooted in painting, she has primarily developed her artistic voice within printmaking. From 2013 to 2022, Lauma held seventeen solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group, curated, and plein air exhibitions, underscoring her active role in the contemporary art community.
Known for her distinctive, large-scale drawings, Lauma works with pen or pencil, and occasionally utilizes acrylics. When she does employ acrylic paint, it serves a graphic function—used to delineate crisp lines, circles, or squares—rather than traditional painterly techniques. Unlike conventional printmaking, Lauma does not produce multiples; each artwork exists as a unique creation. Her preference for monochrome reveals a conscious shift away from painting, emphasizing her dedication to exploring the expressive strength of the line.
Baltic symbolism recurs throughout Lauma's oeuvre, appearing in nuanced and refined forms that bridge ancient motifs with contemporary signs and symbols. Her compositions can also recall Australian Aboriginal art, pointing to the formation of universal cosmogonies—visual interpretations of the world’s structure and origin. Her body of work frequently explores subjects ranging from the microcosm, such as molecules and cells, to the macrocosm, including stars, skillfully merging ancient and modern sensibilities.
The decorative and ornamental features of Eva Lauma’s works are accentuated by her application of layered techniques, integrating glossy, ultraviolet, and phosphorescent effects. These shifts in lighting reference digital and industrial textures characteristic of the modern age, prompting viewers to contemplate the convergence of past and present. In 2018, the Ministry of Culture recognized Eva Lauma’s artistic contributions by awarding her the status of Art Creator.
