Alice in Wonderland

Upon encountering the works of Kristina Daniūnaitė, one is immediately struck by the way her art refuses to be passively viewed. According to art critic Vaidilutė Brazauskaitė, Daniūnaitė does not allow for indifferent spectators—her creations compel engagement and thoughtful attention. While the visual allure of her paintings initially draws viewers in, it is through closer examination that multiple layers of meaning begin to unfold. These pieces are accessible to all, yet they particularly reward those willing to dedicate time to reflection, encouraging a deeper exploration beneath their captivating surfaces.

Daniūnaitė’s distinctive approach is characterized by dreamlike imagery, reminiscent of the atmospheric intensity found in Edgar Allan Poe’s literature. Her skillful use of monochrome etching, coupled with fine, delicate lines and misty effects, envelops her works in mystery. Scenes of urban life, such as facades of buildings, transcend straightforward depiction—windows are transformed into eyes, facades suggest hidden narratives. Light rarely prevails in her compositions; instead, subtle gradations of gray and black create the impression of endless dusk, hinting at the emotional and conceptual depth concealed below the surface.

The subject matter of Daniūnaitė’s art frequently engages with solitude and inward reflection. Her enigmatic, frequently solitary figures and fantastical creatures prompt a sense of wonder, mirroring themes of isolation central to her creative exploration. Narrative elements drawn from fairy tales and theater—such as masks, elaborate costumes, puppets, and magical forests—often appear in her work. These motifs function as symbols reflecting the mysterious aspects of human nature, challenging viewers to search for their own interpretations, feelings, and understanding as they encounter each piece.

Kristina Daniūnaitė, born in 1975, began her artistic studies at the School of Fine Arts in Panevėžys before specializing in fine glass and graphic arts in Kaunas and Vilnius. She received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Graphic Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts, and since 2009 has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union. Daniūnaitė is dedicated to graphic techniques—most notably etching and aquatint; she also teaches at the Vilnius Pupils’ Creative and Educational Centre as well as the “Spalvų juoaks” art studio. Her works have been presented in exhibitions in Lithuania and internationally since 1998, and since 2013 she has actively taken part in plein air workshops, consistently strengthening her influence within the artistic community.
