More about this artwork

In this painting, fluffy, voluminous clouds dominate the sky over a serene landscape. The clouds, rendered in shades of blue and white, appear soft and almost tactile, floating gently above the horizon. Below the clouds, the landscape unfolds in vibrant green, suggesting lush, rolling hills. A hint of mountains or large hills looms faintly in the distance, their outlines muted and blending into the sky. In the forefront, there are small, vivid patches of trees and foliage, painted in bright yellows and greens, providing a stark contrast to the soothing colors of the sky. The scenery is bathed in a warm, ambient light, hinting at either a sunrise or sunset, casting a tranquil and somewhat melancholic mood over the entire scene. Small touches of red at the bottom suggest wildflowers or perhaps the tips of autumnal trees. The overall effect is one of peaceful reflection, inviting the viewer to pause and immerse in the quiet beauty of a Lithuanian landscape under a cloud-filled sky.

Jolanta Kanapickaitė is a contemporary artist whose work delves into the perpetual cycles of time, such as the interplay between night and day. She regards painting as a bridge connecting these cycles—an immersive process that guides her toward self-discovery and a deeper grasp of being. For her, painting transcends time, enveloping the artist in sensation and emotion, and offering the means to express both the calm and vitality she perceives within the flow of life.

Kanapickaitė’s creative approach centers on harmonizing color, form, and line, with abstract expression holding a pivotal place in her paintings. Her canvases are frequently animated by the impulses of spontaneous and uninhibited brushwork, echoing her belief that painting resembles an unspoken, visual form of poetry. Through abstraction, her intention is to distill the spirit of various surroundings—whether that be private emotions, landscapes of fields and mountains, forests, rivers, or urban spaces—and to contemplate the intricate ties connecting people, nature, and urban environments.

Jolanta Kanapickaitė lives and produces her art in Vilnius, Stakliškės, and Molėtai. She possesses a robust academic background in the arts, having studied painting under Marija Teresė Rožanskaitė at the Vilnius Justinas Vienožinskis Art School, and continuing her education at the Jūratė Stauskaitė Children and Youth Art School during 1992–1993. She earned a Master’s degree in Visual Arts (Painting) under Professor Ričardas Bartkevičius, as well as a teacher’s qualification under Professor Jonas Gudmonas, and completed a Master’s in Social Pedagogy in 1999. Her doctorate in Education, received in 2009, focused on the individualization of adult art education.

Since 2013, Kanapickaitė has served at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, where she remains engaged in painting exhibitions and directs cultural and educational initiatives at the library. Her election in 2022 to the Council of the Society of Art Educators, which marked its 30th anniversary that year, further demonstrates her enduring dedication to both creating art and advancing art education in Lithuania.
