Arvydas Kašauskas, born in 1959 in Vilnius, Lithuania, is a contemporary artist whose work is deeply anchored in classical traditions while exploring innovative approaches to painting. Between 1977 and 1982, he attended Vilnius Academy of Arts, focusing on fresco and mosaic, where he established a solid grounding in expressive drawing and powerful composition. Though his teachers initially encouraged a restrained use of color, with experience Kašauskas came to believe that color itself forms the essence of painting.
Kašauskas sees his art as a continuous interpretation of the surrounding world, striving to convey its impressions on canvas. He brings together color, texture, expressive drawing, and characteristic brushwork to produce vibrant and distinctive pieces. Through his paintings, he seeks to “encode” information, emotions, and spiritual states, ensuring that each canvas emanates a unique energy that endures beyond his own existence.
Praised for his ability to combine historical sensibilities with modern, abstract techniques, the artist is distinguished by bold, dynamic brushstrokes reminiscent of his background in fresco painting, as well as a luminous color palette that recalls the Renaissance. Drawing regularly from the treasures of the past, Kašauskas contends that profound composition is born from an understanding of history. At the same time, his works remain spontaneous and direct, shaped by improvisation, intuition, and an openness to the unpredictable nature of creativity.
Deeply committed to plein air painting, Kašauskas frequently journeys throughout Lithuania, finding inspiration in its forests, meadows, villages, rivers, and marshlands. Through such travels, he contributes to a grand visual record of the Lithuanian landscape, filling his depictions with underlying rhythm and feeling. His landscapes express intangible spiritual states and resonances, inviting viewers to experience moments and moods that transcend time.
