More about this artwork

This painting depicts a vibrant scene at a smokehouse. The building is bright red with thick white smoke billowing from its chimney. The ground is coated in snow. Four figures are active around the smokehouse. One person in the foreground is handling a smoked pig. Another nearby is carrying a bucket. The other two figures seem engaged in different tasks, one standing and another possibly prepping food. Various kitchen items are scattered around, suggesting a busy day of food processing.Jonas Daniliauskas, the artist, uses a vivid, expressive style. His brushstrokes are loose and colorful. The scene feels alive and dynamic. It's a wonderful glimpse into everyday life, captured in rich, textured artistry.

Artist

Jonas Daniliauskas stands as an esteemed Lithuanian artist, widely recognized for the steadfastness and continuity in his creative pursuits. As both a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Association and an artist acknowledged by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, Daniliauskas has established a significant role within the country’s artistic landscape. Rather than pursuing constant innovation, he values authenticity, often revisiting familiar compositions until a deep internal urge guides his artistic direction.

He is distinguished by his intent to capture expressive impact with the most restrained means. Although many themes and motifs from his early years have endured, his artistic outlook has transformed over time. His later pieces are characterized by brighter tones, moving away from somber or tragic elements and instead embracing a softer and more hopeful view of life and the human condition.

The inspiration for much of his art lies in the appeal of daily existence, with frequent depictions of love, isolation, harmony between humanity and nature, and the disappearing countryside of Lithuania. Daniliauskas does not shy away from illustrating the harsher aspects of life; he believes even unattractive elements can open paths to beauty, and that a form of poetry can be found in even unpleasant characters. This subtle sensibility infuses his canvases with a powerfully personal and resonant atmosphere.

For Daniliauskas, painting is a contemplative act, similar to constructing a recollection, as though floating and seeing an island slowly materialize. He is far from a passive observer of factual reality—his inspiration springs from his own experiences, and he often studies and notes color arrangements with pastels before committing to a painting. His artwork has been acquired by esteemed collections such as the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, the National M. K. Čiurlionis Museum of Art, Tartle, the National Museum of Latvia, and the Tretyakov Gallery, highlighting the influential mark he has left on Lithuanian art.
