More about this artwork

The triptych titled "Exhibits" by Antanas Adomaitis presents a series of surreal, anthropomorphic figures across three connected panels, each with a distinct composition but unified by a thematic focus on amalgamated creatures and a whimsically macabre aesthetic. The color palette of soft browns, creams, and subtle oranges links the panels harmoniously. In the first panel, we observe a human-like figure seemingly relaxing back into a surreal seat with extended graceful limbs and exaggerated facial features; the creature is adorned with different mechanical and organic elements that blend into its anatomy. It appears to be in a calm, lounging pose, contributing to a dreamlike atmosphere. The central panel features another creature, this one built around a focal element that appears to be teapot-like, suggesting notions of domesticity turned bizarre. This central figure, more mechanical and shaped than the others, engages the viewer directly with a complex expression captured within its entwined pipes and facial constructs, indicative perhaps of internal chaos or confusion. In the last panel, there are two figures. One is dramatically bent over, entangled in itself on what appears to be a toilet, and the other rises above it, with both figures connected by a grotesque, visceral linking of flesh or tubing. This scene invokes both humor and horror, examining themes of connection, repulsion, or dependency.Together, these images might invoke thoughts about the relationship between the natural and artificial, the inner mechanisms of the psyche, or perhaps the absurdity of modern human existence.

Artist

Antanas Adomaitis is a renowned painter, sculptor, and wood carver, profoundly committed to his native Samogitia and actively engaged in cultivating the cultural life of his hometown. His acclaim reaches well beyond the borders of Lithuania, as his painting exhibitions have been held in countries like Germany, Holland, and even in New York, presenting his artistic vision to audiences across the world.

Recognized for his inexhaustible energy and originality, Antanas constantly produces a wide array of innovative ideas. He does not draw inspiration from bohemian circles or contemporary artists; instead, his creativity derives from a deep connection to nature and the rich traditions of his homeland. This foundation bestows a distinct authenticity and resonance upon his work.

Adomaitis’s surrealistic approach is distinguished by exceptional technical skill paired with vivid imagination. Humour and self-irony frequently appear in his art, enhancing both its intrigue and approachability. Unafraid to address pressing social issues or profound existential matters, he uses both sharp wit and boldness, deliberately avoiding superfluous decoration.

Those who step into the fantastical world portrayed in Adomaitis’s works find the experience indelible. The brilliant interplay of imaginative concepts, energetic brushstrokes, and a sensitive grasp of wood as a material showcase not only the breadth of his talent but also his remarkable ability to capture the essence of his chosen mediums.
