More about this artwork

The painting portrays a crowded gathering of sheep densely packed under a vast, expansive sky. The sheep, varied in color, primarily shades of white, brown, and black, are shown with human-like eyes that gaze directly out of the canvas, endowing them with a surreal, anthropomorphic quality. Their expressions are intense and somewhat eerie as they peer outward, creating a striking contrast against the calm, pastoral background of green fields and a distant horizon under a cloudy sky. The diversity in the eye colors—golden, gray, deep brown—adds a mystical element to the scene. The central figure, a sheep with curving horns and a commanding presence, appears to be a focal point around which the other sheep are clustered.

Artūras Braziūnas, a Lithuanian artist, is part of the middle generation—the first to have the opportunity to freely engage in creative endeavors after lengthy periods of occupation and censorship in Lithuania. This significant turning point deeply shaped his perspective, leading him to cherish his artistic liberty. His outlook formed during a critical period marked by social and political upheaval, and this background instilled in him an idealistic spirit and a faith in illumination, virtue, and hope. According to Braziūnas, these qualities resonate within his art, which features elements of naivety, romanticism, glowing hues, and a marked pursuit of pure color. He identifies himself as an exponent of Romantic Surrealism, seeking not to startle or disturb viewers, but to immerse them in an alternate reality and engage them in a sincere dialogue through his art.

Braziūnas bases his artistic practice in realism, yet he deliberately refrains from straightforward depictions of nature or objects. Rather, he reinterprets these forms, constructing a singular artistic realm where animals, elements of nature, and lifeless objects interact in surprising ways. The animals portrayed in his paintings become distinct characters, frequently meeting the viewer’s gaze in a manner that hints at unspoken stories or messages. Through these animal figures, he addresses the audience directly, while the depicted landscapes are adapted and stylized, tailored to fit the intent of each particular piece. This transformative approach brings forth surreal visuals—a parallel dimension depicted with lifelike techniques, providing a sense of escapism and conveying the sensation of dreaming with open eyes.

Braziūnas leads a simple, unaffected daily life. Each morning, he rises, enjoys a cup of coffee, and heads straight to his studio—a practical routine that does not depend on waiting for inspiration to strike. For him, inspiration often arises from the act of working itself: standing before a blank canvas usually suffices to ignite his creativity. Music, soft and unobtrusive, is an essential part of his workspace, helping him focus and enriching his painting process. His studio is filled with sheets of paper—sometimes dispersed, sometimes orderly—that serve as a vital repository of evolving thoughts and sudden insights, ensuring that no spark of inspiration is lost.

When starting a new project, Braziūnas often begins with a visual concept in mind, postponing the decision to name the work. As the painting takes shape, he becomes more familiar with the character emerging on the canvas, and frequently invents stories to accompany this figure as he paints. In this way, he not only produces an image but also weaves a narrative—occasionally laced with irony or humor—which deepens the relationship between the artwork and its audience. This seamless fusion of visual and narrative elements underscores Braziūnas’s dedication to connecting with viewers on several levels.
