Ričardas Garbačiauskas, a Lithuanian artist, delves into the language of abstract painting in his recent work. His paintings intertwine elements drawn from living nature, capturing the ongoing transformation of natural forms and phenomena. The canvases often display energetic, seemingly impulsive brushstrokes that intersect, creating rhythmic and ever-shifting patterns. Utilizing dark, contrasting silhouettes upon light backgrounds, Garbačiauskas composes asymmetrical works distinguished by dynamic movement, unpredictability, and emotional intensity.
Garbačiauskas was born in Vilnius in 1956 and completed his painting studies at the Vilnius Art Institute in 1980, where he received qualifications as both an artist-painter and a pedagogue. Since 1982, he has taken part in numerous exhibitions at both national and international levels and has held more than 20 solo exhibitions in Lithuania as well as abroad. Actively engaging in the art world, he has participated in as many as 60 group exhibitions in countries including Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Ukraine, and Russia.
A member of the Lithuanian Union of Artists since 1992, Garbačiauskas served as chairman of the Šiauliai artists’ organization from 2009 to 2016. His extensive career in education saw him teaching at Šiauliai University from 1980 to 2021, during which he held positions as department head, dean, and vice dean. In recognition of his artistic achievements, he was awarded the title of professor.
Garbačiauskas’s artistic accomplishments have earned him numerous distinctions. The Šiauliai Art Gallery honored him for advancing the aesthetics of modernist painting in 2005 and 2009. In 2011, the Šiauliai municipality recognized him as Artist of the Year for his active involvement in exhibitions and his impact on figurative painting; in 2022, he again received this recognition for his creativity and artistic versatility. His miniature works were also distinguished as the most artistic collection at the 2012 annual exhibition held at the Šiauliai Culture Center Gallery, "Laiptai."
