More about this artwork

This painting features a group of abstractly depicted birds, rendered in a palette of cool blues, greys, and subtle hints of warmer tones. The birds are portrayed in a fragmented, cubist style, blending into a dynamic, yet harmonious background that shares their colors and geometric fragmentation. Their forms are simplified into shapes and planes that suggest their features and body positions, creating a sense of depth and interaction among them. The overall effect is both tranquil and intriguing, inviting the viewer to decipher their forms and relationships within the fluid, dreamlike composition.

Artist

Tomas Stanaitis was born on May 27, 1985, in Kaunas, Lithuania. He is acknowledged as an artist who has made his mark on the Lithuanian contemporary art scene, with a distinct emphasis on painting. In 2018, Stanaitis earned his Bachelor’s degree in Painting from the Kaunas Faculty of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VDA). Following his graduation, he began shaping his unique artistic language and became an active participant in exhibitions.

In 2020, Stanaitis joined the Lithuanian Union of Artists, a testament to his rising reputation among professionals. His artwork has been included in a number of national and international exhibitions, including the International Painting Exhibition "Young Painting of Kaunas and Riga" at the Kaunas Picture Gallery in 2018, as well as the International Watercolor Biennial "Baltic Bridges" held in Kaunas in both 2020 and 2024.

Stanaitis’ work is marked by a realistic and autobiographical approach. Drawing on daily observations, he finds inspiration in nature, photographs, and sketches preserved in his private archive. While his paintings often depict everyday settings and moments, they carry a diary-like depth and introspection that resonates with universal human experiences. The subtle balance he achieves between meticulously rendered details and overarching reflections on time, place, and memory results in a powerful visual story.

Stanaitis’ abilities have been recognized with a diploma from the A. Švėgžda Drawing Competition in Vilnius (2019). Dr. Jovita Varkulevičienė, an art critic and painter, observes that his paintings stand out for their uncommon fusion of realistic lines, abstracted forms, and delicate color schemes. This melding of concrete representation with generalized features, together with the muted and existential tone present in his work, defines a unique and personal aesthetic in the context of contemporary Lithuanian painting.
