More about this artwork

In the painting "Equinox Dance" by Jurgita Gerlikaitė, there is an image of a group of identical female figures in black, positioned in a line and captured in motion as though dancing or moving energetically across a textured green background that resembles the cross-section of a leaf or plant tissue. Above them, a large translucent, glowing orb floats, connected to the leaf-like surface by a dark, meandering line that suggests a tether or a shadow. The entire composition is suffused with a light, radiating green hue, creating an atmosphere of ethereal, natural energy. This design intertwines elements of nature with human activity, evoking a sense of harmony and rhythmic flow.

Jurgita Gerlikaitė stands out as an artist celebrated for works that evoke haunting beauty, infused with a touch of surrealism echoing a distinctly European spirit. Her visual expression frequently immerses viewers in an almost dreamlike world, where the line between psychological subconscious and tangible reality dissolves, orchestrated through a refined use of diverse objects and materials. Through her creations, Gerlikaitė investigates the human condition and the ongoing evolution of the inner universe, offering audiences a window into a singular blend of imagination and emotion.

Her exhibitions have brought Gerlikaitė to various corners of the world, with her artwork featured in galleries throughout Europe, as well as in Japan, the Middle East, and the United States. Such international presence illustrates her knack for engaging audiences from varied cultural backgrounds, sparking intrigue and fostering resonance among people of many nations. The universal nature of her subject matter, coupled with her lyrical approach to both shape and meaning, has secured Gerlikaitė a unique position within contemporary art circles.

Jurgita Gerlikaitė, born and raised in Vilnius within a family of artists, embarked on her formal education at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, where she earned a BA in Art History and Theory in 1998. She later broadened her expertise by undertaking studies in graphic and fine arts—not only in Lithuania but also in Iceland as a recipient of the Nordic Council of Ministers Scholarship, and in Denmark. This wide-ranging academic journey informs her multidisciplinary method, reflected in collections like Spring Equinox, Meditations, Metaphysical Reconstructions, Portrait Visions, and her series focused on urban themes.

Beyond her artistic practice, Gerlikaitė pursues careers as a graphic designer and art critic. She obtained an MBA in UNESCO Cultural Management and Cultural Policy at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2009. Since 2003, Gerlikaitė has worked independently as an artist and has been affiliated with the Lithuanian Artists' Union since 2006 and with LATGA since 2018.
