More about this artwork

In the painting "Sweet Afternoon Sleep" by Giedrė Bartusevičiūtė, a peaceful scene is depicted. It shows a woman sleeping calmly in water. Her reflection forms a cross with the line of the shore behind her. The background is muted, mostly in beige and soft earth tones, contrasting with the dark outlines of distant hills. The style is modern and somewhat abstract. Bartusevičiūtė uses thick, textured layers of paint on parts of the canvas. This technique adds depth and an almost tactile quality to the flat image. The painter blends realism with abstraction, creating a dreamy, serene atmosphere. This style encourages viewers to feel the tranquility of the scene.

Giedrė Bartusevičiūtė, born on February 2, 1970, is a Lithuanian artist whose academic path in art concluded with her earning a Master of Arts degree. In 1996, she completed her studies at the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius Academy of Arts, marking a pivotal moment in her artistic development.

Bartusevičiūtė spent many years building her career as an interior designer. Throughout this time, she was not only involved in shaping interior environments but also in thoughtfully selecting and curating artwork for her clients. This role granted her a profound insight into the relationship between art and living spaces, as well as an understanding of how art influences a home's atmosphere.

After dedicating years to interior design, she redirected her creative energy toward painting within her private studio. This shift signifies a significant chapter in her artistic evolution, allowing her to fully commit to the cultivation of her own artistic voice. The studio's environment provides her with the liberty to experiment with new techniques and visual concepts.

Giedrė Bartusevičiūtė predominantly paints with oils, though she sometimes incorporates acrylics into her work. Her subjects frequently explore elements of nature, including fog, constellations, and atmospheric themes. Intentionally steering clear of aggression, tension, or stark contrasts, she seeks depth and distant horizons within her compositions. Her intent is to foster a sense of harmony and tranquility, reflecting her belief that art should contribute to the peacefulness of the environments in which it is placed.
