More about this artwork

The painting captures a bustling winter scene vividly reflected through bold, impasto strokes of blues, whites, and varied colors suggesting a play of light and shadow. A group of people, abstract in form but articulate in their wintry attire, navigate a slippery, snow-covered pathway. The environment around them bursts with a rich palette of autumnal hues—reds, yellows, and oranges—interspersed with deep blacks and hints of green, perhaps indicating lingering fall colors amidst the encroaching cold. Above, the sky, a dynamic clash of blues and whites, appears tumultuous yet somehow serene, possibly indicating the fleeting light of a winter's evening. Reflections in ice or puddles on the ground echo the vibrancy of the scene, adding depth and a sense of damp coldness. The painting pulses with life, its texture emphasizing the harsh, invigorating air of a winter's dusk.

Leonardas Černiauskas stands out as a distinguished artist, celebrated for his distinctive and lively approach to painting. Drawing deep inspiration from the Lithuanian countryside, he reimagines familiar rural scenes with a fresh and unexpected perspective. Observers of his work are often struck by an interplay of nostalgia and novelty—the landscapes appear both intimately familiar and remarkably new.

Černiauskas possesses a remarkable talent for transforming ordinary scenes into dynamic and expressive artworks. He utilizes vigorous brushstrokes and striking color contrasts, breathing vitality and movement into traditional landscapes. Autumn remains his preferred season, where brilliant leaves converge with a clear blue sky, yet he also captures the beauty of winter, depicting snowy vistas with animated reflections and sunlight breaking through the clouds. Through his artistic vision, even Lithuania’s calmest views are rendered extraordinary, sometimes even exotic.

Leonardas Černiauskas’s art has earned him recognition beyond his homeland, with his pieces held in private collections throughout Lithuania, Europe, and the United States. He founded the “Art Gallery...- Workshop” in Žemaitija National Park, setting up his creative base in the former water mill once owned by Count Suazelis. This setting not only serves as his home but also as his studio, further deepening his bond with the nature that fuels his creativity.

Over the course of his career, Černiauskas has presented his works in around 85 solo exhibitions. He holds an active membership in the Žemaitija Artists' Union and leads the “3+” group of professional artists in Plungė. His dedication to the regional art community and his energetic painting style have secured his place as a leading figure in Lithuania’s art world.
