More about this artwork

This painting by Povilas Dirgėla captures the powerful movement of the ocean. It's called "SEA 188 - 189" and is a diptych, meaning it's made up of two panels. The left side shows a big, greenish wave rising. It's about to crash. The right side continues the scene with the wave breaking, sending white foam everywhere. The colors are vivid. Shades of green and blue dominate, highlighted by whites and dark, sandy tones near the shore. Dirgėla's style is realistic with a touch of drama in the way he portrays the sea's energy and texture. His painting almost makes you hear the sound of the sea.

Artist

Povilas Dirgėla, a Lithuanian artist, is celebrated for his steadfast devotion to marine art—a genre that calls for both refined technical ability and a profound understanding of nature. Despite the waning interest in marine painting among modern artists, Dirgėla continues to focus his creative energy on portraying the essence of the sea, dedicating himself entirely to the depiction of water and its interplay with light.

For Dirgėla, the sea serves as a limitless source of artistic inspiration. His works commonly illustrate the ocean in motion: waves rise and fall, crash along sandy coastlines, and gleam beneath the golden hues of sunset. Each painting reveals a unique facet of the ocean's temperament, ranging from gentle ripples to the unrestrained force of pounding surf, showcasing both its allure and its grandeur.

Residing in the Lithuanian coastal city of Klaipėda, Povilas Dirgėla has maintained a deep and enduring connection to the sea throughout his life. He approaches the ocean with genuine reverence, a quality reflected in the precision of his craft. The artist himself has remarked that he is careful "not to offend the sea by being ignorant, disingenuous or badly painted," convinced that his authenticity grants him rare opportunities to witness—and depict—the sea’s most captivating and unpredictable displays on canvas.

Dirgėla’s art is distinguished by its deliberate exclusion of human presence—no boats, harbours, or other signs of civilization interrupt his seascapes. His work is wholly focused on the ever-changing relationship between water and light, as well as the wild, unrestrained forces of nature. Through this approach, Povilas Dirgėla invites observers to witness not only the appearance of the sea, but also its soul, magnificence, and perpetual motion.
