More about this artwork

This is an intriguing sculpture by Artūras Tamašauskas titled "Traveling Fish." The artwork depicts a fish with a very unique body. The front part looks like a typical fish head with big, expressive eyes. Its body transforms into mechanical parts including what seems to be a brass horn and a spine made of interlocking metal pieces. The tail ends in a small wheel. The style of this piece combines elements of steampunk with whimsy. Steampunk is a genre that brings together technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Tamašauskas is known for his ability to turn everyday objects into art. Here, he uses mixed materials to give the fish a fantastical, machine-like quality. It feels both old-fashioned and imaginative.

Artūras Tamašauskas was born in 1963 in Viešintos, a village in the Anykščiai district. Immersed in an environment rich with art and music during his upbringing, Artūras was naturally inclined to pursue a career in the arts. He is now renowned for his expertise in crafting small-scale sculptures, frequently employing ready-made or repurposed objects and tools as part of his artistic process.

His work is closely aligned with the steampunk aesthetic, notable for its unique fusion of historical and contemporary elements. Artūras is celebrated for revitalizing abandoned items, reimagining them as modern sculptures that inspire both nostalgia and a sense of inventive energy. The transition from each object's original function to its new artistic existence endows his creations with layered emotional depth.

Exhibiting a refined command over his materials, Artūras integrates traditional craftsmanship with contemporary technological methods—a blend honed through specialized education and many years of practice. His sculptures are admired for their visual appeal, their emotional impact on viewers, and an overall uplifting spirit, often highlighted by a gentle humor. These works engage not just visually but also connect deeply with the emotions of their audience.

Committed to ecological responsibility, Artūras produces his art with recycled and environmentally sustainable materials, foregrounding themes of peace and safety. His exhibitions consistently draw interest, and his pieces have been collected by institutions and private collectors across the globe, including in Lithuania, Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, the USA, Australia, and China. In spite of his widespread success, Artūras Tamašauskas remains modest about his achievements, a factor that may contribute to his relatively limited broader recognition.
