Artist

Rokas Beržiūnas, a contemporary Lithuanian artist born in 1983 in Vilnius, is acclaimed for his distinct abstract paintings—often described as gateways to intricately encoded spaces and concealed meanings. Beržiūnas possesses a solid academic foundation in the arts, having studied sculpture at the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art School between 1994 and 2002. In 2006, he graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a bachelor's degree in interior design. From 2004 to 2006, he expanded his expertise by working as an exhibition designer at the "Vartai" Gallery.

Since 2014, Rokas Beržiūnas has been affiliated with the Lithuanian Artists' Association and has received official recognition as an Artist from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. As a representative of the younger generation of Lithuanian painters, he has garnered acknowledgment both in Lithuania and abroad. From 2005 onward, Beržiūnas has dedicated himself to acrylic painting, consistently taking part in art fairs, group exhibitions, and solo shows. His body of work ranges from mysterious abstracted landscapes to rhythmic compositions that are entirely abstract.

Drawing on philosophical concepts expressed through visual language, the artist explores these ideas using both subtlety and expressiveness. His paintings often suggest landscapes that remain inaccessible—such as cosmic nebulae, explosions of stars, or the surfaces of yet-unknown planets. Several art critics, among them Nijolė Nevčesauskienė and Vidas Poškus, have noted similarities between Beržiūnas’ work and that of M. K. Čiurlionis. Poškus, in particular, references the “plastic alphabet” that unites them—ornamental luminescence and an atmospheric mist evoking the enigma of symbolism—underscoring Čiurlionis’ enduring impact on Beržiūnas’ artistic path.

Art critic Véra Kempf highlights the minimalist elegance and sophistication that define the recent works of Rokas Beržiūnas. She points to his refined brushwork and his careful modulation of color, which together produce compositions distinguished by subtle, subdued tones and an overall sense of modernity and grace. Beržiūnas is also noted for his experimental methods, at times incorporating elements such as sand or volcanic ash into his pieces. These additions enhance the tactile surface and create a cinematic sense of depth, further distinguishing his visual style.
