More about this artwork

This painting by Jolanta Gegelevičiūtė, titled "Aspiration," features a complex array of geometric shapes and vibrant textures. The colors used range from muted browns and greys to striking whites and deep reds. These shapes intersect and overlap, creating a layered effect. Some parts appear smooth, while others have more texture, possibly indicating brush strokes or palette knife applications. The style is abstract, focusing more on form and color than on representing real objects. Jolanta Gegelevičiūtė uses sharp angles and a diverse palette to convey depth and emotion. Her technique gives the impression of dynamic movement within the still image, as if the shapes are almost shifting before our eyes. The overall effect is both striking and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to interpret their own meanings from the intersections and contrasts.

Jolanta Gegelevičiūtė, born in 1966 in Lithuania’s Rokiškis district, established the groundwork for her artistic journey upon graduating from the Lithuanian State Art Institute (now the Vilnius Academy of Arts) in 1989. Her multifaceted oeuvre encompasses a range of mediums, reflecting her adaptability as a painter as well as a freelance graphic designer. Since 2008, she has been an active participant in the Lithuanian art scene as a member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Association.

Gegelevičiūtė’s creative output spans many disciplines—textiles, digital graphics, and poetry among them. Her dedication to artistic inquiry is evident in the breadth of her exhibition history, with more than ten solo exhibitions and participation in an array of group shows. This extensive record demonstrates her ongoing engagement in exchanges with fellow artists and viewers, both within Lithuania and internationally.

Central to Jolanta Gegelevičiūtė’s artistic vision is the motif of the path, which recurs throughout her statements about her work. She sees the path as fascinating and mysterious, capable of both guiding and misleading, evolving with every new step. For Gegelevičiūtė, the path serves as more than just a route; it symbolizes perspective, movement, and the perpetual interplay between escaping and being present.

This ethos of movement and introspection infuses not only her visual art but also her textile pieces and poetry. Gegelevičiūtė encourages audiences to reflect on broader interpretations of travel—be it physical, virtual, or imaginative. Ultimately, her creations underscore the necessity of presence, conveying that finding the true path involves embracing the present moment and recognizing the value inherent in movement itself.
