Jonas Šidlauskas, a Lithuanian artist, began his formal training at the J. Naujalis Art School. This early period played a vital role in developing his artistic skills and deepening his understanding of visual expression from an early age. Subsequent studies allowed him to further refine and define his distinctive artistic style.
Šidlauskas continued his education at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, where he studied painting under the mentorship of notable artists such as Vladas Karatajas, Antanas Kmieliauskas, Arvydas Šaltenis, and Algimantas Švėgždas. Among his peers were Arūnas Vaitkūnas, Audronė Petrašiūnaitė, Eugenijus Varkulevičius, and Nomeda Saukienė, each of whom made notable contributions to Lithuanian art. The years he spent surrounded by such gifted colleagues and mentors were instrumental in shaping both his technique and artistic perspective.
The tranquil countryside holds particular importance as an inspiration for Šidlauskas. Drawing heavily on memories from his childhood summers near Kaunas, he often leaves the city for rural settings as soon as spring arrives. Amid the fresh air and peaceful landscape, he finds an ideal atmosphere for painting, which imbues his canvases with nostalgia and tranquility, qualities that are keenly felt by his audience.
Plein-air painting holds a special place in Šidlauskas’ practice, much like it did for the early Impressionists. He focuses on capturing the ephemeral effects of light and the immediacy of first impressions, employing rapid, expressive brushstrokes that sometimes verge on abstraction. Though his romantic landscapes are imbued with warmth and a hazy dreamlike quality, they are not overly sentimental, instead creating an inviting and authentic ambiance. His paintings have entered private collections in Lithuania, as well as in Germany, Japan, and the United States.
