Vytautas Paplauskas is a contemporary artist who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bournemouth University of the Arts in the United Kingdom in 2011. Since then, he has pursued careers as both a painter and photographer, steadily crafting a distinctive visual language throughout his artistic work. His academic background and professional endeavors have shaped his unique outlook and creative production.
In his paintings, Paplauskas embraces the "hard edge" abstraction tradition. This approach employs geometric shapes defined by sharp edges and clear outlines, with no visible underlayers, resulting in crisp and precise surfaces. Rather than focusing on narrative or representational content, his art is anchored in minimalism and carefully orchestrated use of composition and color. His intention is to conjure the sense of imagined spaces or stylized urban landscapes, employing as few visual elements as possible.
The artist often refrains from making explicit references to tangible or material reality, which allows his compositions to remain ambiguous and open to interpretation. Key aspects of his practice include the deliberate use of fragmentation, asymmetry, and negative space. By employing these techniques, Paplauskas creates visually stimulating puzzles that encourage viewers to interpret and imagine for themselves, eliciting a personal and subjective engagement with each work.
His creative method is influenced by the legacy of modern art as well as his personal experiences exploring urban environments. By intuitively selecting and abstracting fragments from the city’s strict forms, Paplauskas blends impromptu visual impressions with calculated, deliberate structure. The outcome is a collection of geometric works, executed in paint on canvas, that achieve a synthesis of experimentation and harmony, illustrating the interplay between instinct and intellect.
